Wind Turbine

Wind Turbine (II): Safety and LOTO Procedures

RECOMMENDATION

Virtual classroom

To carry out the simulator exercises, a clear space of at least 3×3 meters is required.

If you have any questions about this or any other topic, please do not hesitate to contact us.

DESCRIPTION

This virtual reality simulator provides an opportunity to teach students about the safety measures to be observed when carrying out maintenance work on a wind turbine, such as the use of PPE and the procedures for energising and de-energising the system.

OBJECTIVE

Training students in the rigorous application of safety measures and lockout/tagout procedures, ensuring that work is carried out safely, responsibly and in accordance with regulations.

ACTIVITIES

  • Explanation, identification and provision of PPE for:
    • Work at height.
    • Electrical work.
    • Hydraulic works.
  • Carrying out nine LOTO procedures to ensure safety during wind turbine maintenance:
    • Disconnecting and re-establishing communication with the control centre (versions 1 and 2) to prevent unintended actions.
    • Cutting off and restoring power to the medium-voltage cells, thereby interrupting the high-voltage power supply.
    • Stopping and starting the wind turbine using an HMI.
    • Rotation of the wind turbine, and locking and unlocking of the yaw system.
    • Locking and unlocking the rotor’s rotation by placing the blades in the flag position.
    • Depressurisation and pressurisation of the hydraulic system.
    • Access to the rotor, avoiding static loading of the blades.
    • Locking and unlocking blades for subsequent maintenance.

Other Simulators

We use virtual reality to train Vocational Education and Training students through immersive experiences.
